LoveHairExtensions.com has asked American Dream UK , to help explain fibre ...

Put briefly, synthetic hair is an artificial replica of human hair. The hair is manufactured from man-made materials that, once in its finished state, look and feels similar to that of human hair.

There has always been huge dispute over what’s best - fibre hair or human hair?

Some salons are accustomed to using only one of the two – either human hair or fibre hair.

However, with many new and advanced extension systems available (and a lot more knowledge) technicians are becoming more open to working with both human and fibre extensions, offering their clients more choice. Clients can decide which is best for them after taking into account factors such as: cost, weight, application system and duration of wear.

For instance, you may find that you prefer fibre extensions simply because they are cheaper. The cost of a full-head service using human hair extensions ranges from: £400 to £1000 (depending on brand of extensions, salon location and system.) The same service using fibre may cost from as little as £200 to £600.

On the other hand, whilst fibre is a close match to human hair, it is never exactly the same, and some people prefer using human hair because it looks and feels most natural.

PROS CONS
Cheaper than human hair extensions Can be highly flammable – check with your stylist and remember, whether fibre or not, never leave hair near an open flame!
Available in ANY length - Even 60 inches long! Certain fibres can look over shiny and give you a ‘doll head’ like appearance
Available in any texture, curl or wave formations Low heat resistant fibres can melt under heated appliances, (i.e. blow-dryers, tongs, straighteners)
Available in any colour (as they are man-made, they can be coloured during the production process to match any colour) Low heat fibers cannot be re-styled, you are stuck with the formation it came as.
Certain fibres are light weight so are ideal for clients with hair loss problems. Colour change is usually impossible; fibre does not intake colour, and any dye will just run. You can get some fibres that accept dyes e.g. American Dream Thermofibre, but the dye will be at least 50% duller than the original colour e.g. bright pink would come out as a faded light pink.
Most ponytails & accessory hair pieces are made from fibre due to its cheap price.
New-age fibres are heat resistant – American Dream’s Thermofibre for instance.
This is a man-made fibre, so those of you who are still sceptical about where human hair comes from wouldn’t need to worry.
Perfect for braids, cornrows & single plaits, as fibre is cheap, and fibre can come in any length.
The table points out the good and the bad about synthetic fibre extensions. LoveHairExtensions suggest synthetic hair can look and feel wonderful, as long as the correct fibre has been used and has been applied by a qualified extension specialist.
