What
is Sew-on-Weaving?
Sew-on-Weaving is used to add volume and length
without the use of any resin. The attachment is unnoticeable
as hair wefts are sewn onto the natural hair which is braided
underneath and cannot be seen. Weaving is a safe technique
that does no damage to the client’s own hair, instead
protecting it and allowing natural hair growth to continue.
Weaves can be worn for up to three months.
Suitability
During an initial consultation, your technician will assess
your requirements, lifestyle and hair and scalp condition
to confirm that weaving is suitable for you. If your hair
is thinning or you have bald patches, weaving may still be
considered a suitable option as fibre extensions can be used
to create a base upon which to add hair extensions.
The Process
Prior to attaching extensions the natural hair is washed clean
and blow-dried with cool air.
The base for attaching weaves is formed by braiding the natural
hair into cornrows that sit flat on the scalp. The technician
may add fibre to your braids to make them more durable. Wefts
of hair are then sewn onto the natural hair, not touching
the scalp, with special extension needles and thread. Depending
upon requirements, you may choose to have only a few lines
of weft attached or a full head of weaves.
Caring for Weaves
Extensions applied by Sew-On-Weaving can last for two to three
months although, as the natural hair continues to grow underneath,
the weaves will loosen over time. It is recommended that clients
return to their salon to have their weave tightened every
four weeks and that extensions are removed around eight to
twelve weeks after first application.
Whilst you may wash your hair frequently, to take care of
your extensions and help maintain their condition, it is recommended
that weaves are washed once a week. A low pH shampoo should
be used along with specially formulated care products for
hair extensions.
When shampooing, apply this to the palm of the hands and rub
into a lather before gently massaging into the hair. Take
care not to rub vigorously to prevent extension hair from
matting.
Conditioners can be used, but these should be very light and
care should be taken not to apply this close to where the
wefts are attached to avoid clogging the base area. Conditioners
tend to leave a residue on the base of the weave, so it is
important to rinse thoroughly with warm water. It is best
to avoid applying conditioner too close to the scalp.
You should dry weaves by blotting out excess water and, using
a cool air setting, completely dry the base of the weave.
If human hair has been used, you can style your hair with
heated straighteners and tongs.
New to extensions? You may benefit by returning to the salon
for your first wash to get used to the experience of living
with your new hair.
Depending on the texture of the hair, use either a wide bristle
brush or a wide tooth comb and groom your extensions regularly
throughout the day and last thing at night. Use styling products
recommended by your technician developed specifically for
your hair extensions.
